10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning is not always exciting for a lot of us. But it is important. As the holidays and winter near an end and we start looking forward to spring, something inside of us pushes us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and throwing away things we’ve piled up throughout the winter.
But who says spring cleaning is only for the interior of a house?
The exterior of your house could likely use a little tidying up after a cold, wet winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will drastically improve the curb appeal of your house in Denton, and, more importantly, will offer much-needed care and maintenance that will save you money in years ahead.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the best time to clean out your gutters, since a lot of leaves and debris accumulated during the fall and winter. The pollen count is at its highest during the spring, making a huge mess in your gutters if they aren’t cleaned.
Plus, bugs and animals are scavenging for places to build homes during spring, so having your gutters cleaned out will help to prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, rust stains and returning them to a like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Exterior window cleaning is necessary for spring cleaning. Ground floor windows won’t give you too much of a headache, but any second and third floor windows can be tougher to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a tough chore, and will require a lot of tools, not to mention climbing up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the recommended way to get the panes and the outer frame clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You don’t want clean gutters and windows on a dirty house. That means you are going to want to pressure wash your house too!
Pressure washing is fast, effective and doesn’t cost too much. You can pressure clean your house, outdoor furniture, concrete patios, porches and walkways with very little effort. It will eliminate dirt and mud so they will not permanently stain your house, and you can prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a good cleaning may seem counter-productive since you’ll be driving on it, but actually, a clean, cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your house.
A professional pressure washing company will do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it is pavement, asphalt, stone or another material. Also think about adding a gravel border to your home’s driveway to really make it pop!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your home’s patio gets the most use during the summer, so it is easy to overlook it during the winter when you aren’t doing as much outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio can be in bad condition the first time you walk onto it in the spring.
Detergent and water – and a little hard work – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you see signs of mold or mildew, you may need to think about a more serious option, like power washing, to ensure that friends and family can safely enjoy your patio all summer.
6. Roof Cleaning
Algae and moss are typical home roof issues in Denton. While you are cleaning the exterior of your house, it is a great time to pressure clean your home’s roof too, but you’ll need to use a different method than the one you use for most of your home’s exterior.
If you start to see streaks on your home’s roof, algae is probably the cause. Moss is fairly obvious, too. These contaminants cannot be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you power wash the roof of your house. Both of these methods will ruin the shingles on your home’s roof.
The best course of action for roof cleaning is to spray the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach mixture and let it sit. This solution will eliminate any organisms on your home’s roof without lowering its lifespan.
7. Clean up the Front
The front of your house is going to be what most people passing by see, so try to make the best impression possible for visitors and for yourself! Returning home to a well-maintained exterior will improve your day, and will even motivate you to spend more time outside.
You can clean your front porch with detergent and water or a good power wash. Wipe cobwebs and dirt off of the front porch, and consider painting it a new color for a fresh look! Clean overlooked areas like the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Outdoor Tools
You will probably be spending much more time outdoors, so spring is a wonderful opportunity to organize the things you’ll need for outdoor work.
Gardening tools and pool care equipment should all have an assigned place outside your house – a place that it is safe from weather and out of sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Spending the time to organize in the spring will allow you to appreciate the exterior of your house much more throughout the time of year that you spend the most time outside.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your yard, trees and bushes can make a huge impact on the overall look of your house.
Get rid of weeds near your flower beds and walkways, till up places where you might be planting in the future and sweep off walkways. You can spray pre-emergent weed killer to make yard care easier on yourself throughout the summer. Trim all the bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After being unused for several months, your gas or charcoal grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but even worse they can make you and your family ill.
Wipe it down to remove ash, then scrub the grates with a plastic scrubber or grill brush (so you do not leave behind metal particles that can get into food) and a detergent or degreaser.
You could probably finish all of these projects over the course of a few weekends but it is going to be a lot of hard work. Instead, give us a call!
